Federal Affairs Committee

The MLRC Federal Affairs Committee concentrates its efforts on tracking and explaining bills introduced in Congress to the MLRC membership, who may or may not be aware of the current developments in Washington. The main effort in this regard is the creation of an ongoing list of bills introduced in the 108th Congress that affect the First Amendment or FOIA, which simply serves as a starting point for the membership to get an overview of the legislative landscape. The list itself is relatively simple, containing dates of introduction, prinicipal sponsor, a short description of the bill, the committee of referral and any subsequent legislative action such as hearings or votes. The Committee supplements this overview with articles in each MLRC MediaLawLetter about legislation that is currently receiving active consideration by Congressional committees or the House or Senate as a whole, as well as in-depth articles analyzing important bills and outlining their direct impact on the media.
